Ava DuVernay is a Californian born in Long Beach, California on 24 August 1972. DuVernay was encouraged by her aunt Denise as a little girl. Her aunt was an overnight nursing assistant in order to give her the opportunity to study art theatre or literature. DuVernay instantly became enthralled with the 1959 West Side Story film. DuVernay was educated by her mother about how art can be used to engage people. DuVernay's mother also had a an awareness of social issues and showed DuVernay to express herself by means of the medium of art. DuVernay spent her summers in Lowndes County Alabama, where her father was born and was raised. DuVernay's father remembered watching the historic Civil Rights marches across the Edmund Pettus Bridge, in the nearby town of Selma Alabama. DuVernay was inspired by the summers she spent in Alabama to inspire her next film, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. DuVernay was a graduate from Saint Joseph High School Lakewood California, in 1990. After graduation she was enrolled at her first year at the University of California Los Angeles where she earned qualifications in English as well as African American studies. DuVernay began to produce for broadcast journalism while she was in her college. She started as an intern for CBS News, during the O.J. Simpson trial. DuVernay recalled being asked to look over the rubbish in the house of a member of the jury. DuVernay was dissatisfied with her journalistic duties and decided to move into the world of public relations. DuVernay was hired straight out of college as an intern at a small studio. Her private PR company, The DuVernay Agency was established in 1999. In addition to PR, the company created several lifestyle networks like Urban Beauty Collective, Urban Thought Collective Urban Eye, HelloBeautiful.
